Ellen Jewett

Ellen Jewett currently divides her time between Istanbul where she has founded Klasik Keyifler, an organization dedicated to the proliferation of chamber music, and the US where since 2000 she has been a member of the prize winning Audubon Quartet with whom she has performed over 150 concerts. Hailed by the New York Times for their "strikingly beautiful, luminescent sound" the quartet performs throughout the US and is the quartet-in-residence at Shenandoah University. They also coordinate an intensive string quartet seminar every summer at the Chautauqua Institute.

She has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Africa both as recitalist, and with groups such as the American Chamber Players, the New York Chamber Soloists, the Apple Hill Chamber Players and the Mark Morris Dance Company. She has participated in many international festivals including the Tanglewood Music Center, Banff Center, Ravinia Festival, Spoleto Festival, Olympic Festival and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival. Since. Other chamber music collaborations include performances with Yo Yo Ma, James Buswell, Colin Carr, Eugenia Zuckerman, Anthony Newman and Marcus Thompson.

A frequent performer of new music, she has worked closely with many composers including Phillip Glass, Sir Michael Tippett, Leon Kirchener, John Harbison, Steven Mackey, Steven Stuckey, and Joan Tower and has performed with important contemporary music ensembles such as Continuum, Sequiter and Ensemble X. She is currently a founding member of Hezarfen Ensemble based in Istanbul.

In Turkey she acted as one of the concertmasters of Borusan Orchestra for 3 years and has been a guest concertmaster of the Istanbul State Symphony. A dedicated educator, she has served on the faculties at Istanbul University, McGill University, Ithaca College, SUNY Stony Brook, the Chautauqua Institute, and the Meadowmount School of Music. She has recorded for Centaur, Chandos, Albany, and Newport Classics. She received her Bachelor degree from Indiana University and her Master's from SUNY Stony Brook. Her major teachers have been Joyce Robbins, James Buswell and Josef Gingold.
