Leo Winland

Leo Winland was born in Moscow in 1953. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Natalia Schahovskaja and Mstislav Rostropovitch. He migrated from the Soviet Union in 1975. He continued his studies with Jaqueline du Pre, becoming first cello at the Royal Orchestra in Copenhagen. The following year he was offered the position of first cello at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Stockholm.

Since 1989 he has been first cello at the New Chamber Music Orchestra of Stockholm (artistic director: Essa-Pekka Sallonen) and, in collaboration with Dmitry Sitkovetsky, he held the double role of first cello and manager at "The New European Strings" ensemble.

In 1990 Leo Winland was appointed first cello at the Royal Orchestra of Sweden and the Symphonic Orchestra of Go"teborg. He is also a professor at the Royal Musical College in Stockholm, as well as the Go"teborg Conservatory.

He has made many appearances as a conductor with various Scandinavian chamber music ensembles and has given many recitals as a soloist throughout the world. He often plays at music festivals at Gotland, Sweden, the Musicades de Lyon and Prades in France, the Schlesving-Holstein in Germany, the Korsholm in Finland, and many others.
